Aim and Objectives

The Little Wonders aims to:

Provide a support group/network of families and parents that have had a premature or sick newborn/s

Provide a rotating roster system of volunteers available to listen and support families both in and out of the hospital environment.

Provide the families currently in NICU and those that have transitioned home an informative website and also a 24 hour hotline for parents for general information and emotional support about their sick or premature newborns in an environment both in and away from the hospital

 Administer a creative team of parents, NICU staff and general public to produce items for special occasions for the parents and families of NICU babies.

 Raise money to provide family centered support to those in need

Raise money to improve facilities provided to families in the NICU

 Raise public and political awareness of the problems facing premature and sick newborns

Promote strong communication between doctors, nurses and parents and encouraging parental involvement in the care and development of their baby while in the NICU

Provide emotional and informative support to new parents and their families through one-to-one telephone contact, newsletters, web site, in hospital visits, pamphlets, play groups and social groups.

Provide resources and services for parents and families to reduce the financial strain after having a premature or sick newborn.

Organise and celebrate a designated day for premature babies and children, and their families.


Little Wonders Goals from August 2007 till August 2010

Set up in hospital volunteer program and begin training and criminal checks.

Refurbish butterfly room

Adopt a parent room within close proximity to NICU

Refurbish the breastfeeding room

Create pamphlets with general NICU information

Create a Website

Establish telephone support line

Hold Launch day

Set up a play group for families that have transitioned home

Create newsletters and distribute to members quarterly

Begin fundraising campaign to fund items to support NICU/SCN parents

Supply gift packs for all parents in Level 3 that have given birth to a premature baby containing premmie items.

Supply gift packs for all parents in Level 3 that have given birth to a sick newborn containing items such as a blanket, booties, hat, and dummy

Supply welcome packs for all parents in JHH NICU/ SCN to introduce Little Wonders

Source large companies for regular annual donations

Set up a practical support Team to create items such as mothers day cards and gift packs, fathers day cards and gift packs, Easter and Christmas gifts for the parents and to also help coordinate the making of premature gowns to give to each parent that has given birth to a Premature or Sick newborn that is cared for by John Hunter NICU

Purchase comfortable chairs for parents

Purchase breast feeding pillows

Purchase breast pumps for both on the ward and for hire to parents when they transition home

Set up a transport team to help low income families or families without transport to visit the NICU/SCN each day.

Organise an annual event and family retreat to help give parents a holiday away with like minded people and with children of similar backgrounds.

Organise services and resources to help parents that are out of area to help reduce the costs of items such as Oxygen.
